The Capricorn Claws have been playing in the Netball Queensland Tier 2 Competition for 10 years. This year is the third year that this competition has been all inclusive and the Capricorn Region have been instrumental in the competition’s development, working with Netball Queensland over the past fifteen years to achieve a competition that allows regional players the opportunity to play against the south-east corner.
That’s not to say that there weren’t claws of some form around before 2008. In fact the region has sported a side for many years, known previously as the Redclaws. The Redclaws participated in a variety of competitions from the Qantas Link Cup to the Ergon Energy Championships.
In 2007, the Redclaws were premiers of the state competition, sponsored by Ergon Energy! This was the stepping stone year for Netball Queensland in moving from a Northern Queensland Competition through to a state wide competition. Although teams were invited to participate from the southeast corner, the only teams south of Wide Bay to nominate were Darling Downs, Gold Coast & Brisbane East. The Redclaws dominated from start to finish in the competition and although there were some close games, never looked like dropping the grand final! Awesome effort!
Claws 2007 – Champions!
In 2008, the competition was revamped and Ergon Energy continued to support the Championships. With some strong southern teams contending the competition and some major changes to the line up for the Capricorn side – who would from this point forward be known as the Capricorn Claws – it was a difficult inception year for the side who fought hard and strong, but came away with relatively few wins.
Claws before they were Claws
In 2009, with an all but new side – the squad was not only strong but energetic and ready to hit the court running! Unfortunately, the first round in Townsville provided the team with only 1 win – though many intense battles were had against the 3 other Northern teams and Brisbane East. Rebuilding on the lessons learned from the unfamiliar intensity and high standard of the competition in Townsville, the team regrouped for Brisbane where they faced off against the remaining south-east Queensland teams. There were several close games, but unfortunately for the Claws the score line tipped the other way. But I think it is safe to say that the team saved their best for last…Rockhampton! Home court advantage perhaps?? Whatever the case may be, the Claws were unstoppable as they raced away to win 4 from the 5 games for the weekend. Finally gelling together and putting into play four 15 minute quarters of solid, intense netball – it was poetry in motion! For the final placings however, it was too late – and the side finished the competition in a commendable 9th place. The results from the Rockhampton round also fed through into the North Queensland Cup, which is a competition only contested by Magnetic North, Marlin Coast, Wide Bay & Capricorn. After such a strong finish, the girls came home in 2nd place! Well done!
2017 U/19 Division
Contested by: Brisbane North Cougars, Brisbane South Wildcats, Carina Leagues Club Tigers, Brisbane West Lions, Golden South Jaguars, Suncoast Lynx, Darling Downs Panthers, Wide Bay Thundercats and Capricorn Claws.
New to Samsung QSNL in 2017, the under 19 competition will give the next generation of Queensland netball stars the chance to hone their skills before moving into elite level competition. Teams will compete in a sixteen round competition, with the top four playing off for the championship.
There are eleven talented netballers in the 2018 Team from the Central Queensland Region.
Being a Claw is not only about playing netball. Being a Claw is about just that… C…L…A…W…S
As for 2018…There’s no need for words – we’ll let our game do the talking…
